Cisco IP Phone 7960 series Loose Stand Repair
Cisco IP Phone 7960 series Loose Stand Repair
Many companies use Cisco IP phone nowadays and the place where I work is no exception. We had a few that we had to shelves because the stand would no longer stay in place. The stand would hold if you were setting it while holding the phone but would collapse as soon as the phone was put on a table. Those phone were getting ready to be trashed since we could no longer use them much, because, as it turn out not many people like having their phone face down on their desks.. One of my collegue tought that he might have found a solution on youtube involving some scotch tape and came to check with me since I am known as the resident tinkerer. They know they can't throw any electronic device before I had the time to open it or I'll be pissed:) I usualy try to repair them and if all fails or it is not worth the time, I try to salvage any parts that could be useful in my projects. But before I had time to go check his youtube video, I found a very easy and cheap way to fix the falling stand. All that is needed is a piece of cardboard.
First thing first, we need to open up the phone. It's simple enough of that particular model, you just need to remove the 4 screws on the back (2 are hidden behind the rubber pads) and start separating the two halfs. You'll see that the top seem not to separate as easily, just take a piece of thin plastic and insert it in one of the part that you managed to separate and work your way up. It'll will pop and the two side will separate.
Once you have access to the inside, locate the part where the plastic stand connect. Cut a strip of cardboard, bend it in a V-shape and insert it under the moving plastic part connected to the stand. You can also easily remove that part, put the cardboard piece and put back the plastic part after.
That's pretty much it! All you need to do is close up the phone. Just be careful because there is a small metal wire that is used to push back the plastic button that get pushed when the phone is on the unit and not in used. It got a tendency to get displaced when the phone get opened. Just be sure to put it back into it's place before closing up the phone.
To close up the phone, you need to put back the two pieces by inclining the front part to make the two notch at the top enter their respective groove. To be honest, that is probably the trickiest part of this repair and you might have to fiddle with it a few time before you manaage to align everything and apply strenght until your heard a snap noise.
That's it, you're done. You probably won't be able to adjust the inclination of the phone anymore but the phone will be standing upright and you cna always adjust that before closing up the phone.
